Why Would a Layer2 Decentralize its Sequencer?

Currently, each rollup/L2 chain relies on a single sequencer to manage transaction sequencing, streamlining validation on the L1 chain. Despite its benefits of lower fees and faster transactions, this centralized approach, acknowledged by Vitalik Buterin, exposes vulnerabilities like Single Points of Failure (SPOFs). An outage in December 2023 halted Arbitrium Rollup for 78 minutes, with a week-long recovery time, undermining user trust and global financial system stability. Decentralized sequencers, however, decentralize sequencing tasks among a network of nodes, mitigating risks such as SPOFs, censorship, and MEV monopolies.
